	Architectural Notes in Review #3


[PT] As Sebentas de Projecto assumem-se como um pro- jecto editorial que pretende criar uma colecção de conversas sobre o ensino de Projecto de Arquitectura. Procura-se uma contemplação multidimensional que permita apreender, mesmo que fugazmente, a natureza de uma disciplina que aqui afirma a sua resistência à formalização. O recurso à entrevista como ferramenta expositiva concentra um conjunto de modalidades comunicativas que se tornam particularmente eficazes na aproximação a essa visão: experiência, relato, teorização, memória e aquilo a que se pode chamar de mestria.
Estruturalmente, isolámos três momentos nas decla- rações de Álvaro Siza Vieira quanto à disciplina de Projecto: abrimos com um exercício de partilha sobre a memória enquanto aluno, lembrando alguns dos seus mestres do compasso inicial; recordámos algumas das lições ministradas enquanto professor e reflexões sobre o ensino de arquitectura português amplamente marcado pela Revolução de Abril de 1974; abordámos, por fim, a possibilidade de instigar novos caminhos temáticos e leituras pedagógicas para o ensino, a prática e a valorização da Arquitectura.

[EN] Architectural Notes in Review is an editorial project which aims to curate a collection of conversations about teaching Architectural Design. Multidimensional thoughts which, however fleeting, seek to engender a learning process; the true nature of a discipline that here affirms its resistance to formalisation. Using the interview as an expositional tool brings together an ensemble of communicative modes that become particularly effective when addressing this vision: experience, relation, theory, memory and, what one might call mastery.

Structurally, we have isolated three key moments from Álvaro Siza Vieira's expositions on the subject of Architectural Design: we begin with an exercise in sharing thoughts about his memories as a student, recalling some of his teachers from his early days; we remember some of the lessons he taught as a professor and reflect on the teaching of a Portuguese Architecture so vividly marked by the Revolution of April 1974; and finally, we look at the possibility of coming up with new thematic pathways and pedagogical interpretations for the teaching, practice and validation of Architecture.Note: covers are all provisional

O segundo volume de Fertile Futures, regista todo o laboratório desenvolvido no decurso do programa da Representação Oficial Portuguesa na 18.ª Exposição Internacional de Arquitectura—La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Num primeiro momento dá a conhecer os olhares e os enquadramentos referenciais de cada uma das sete abordagens aos problemas das hidrogeografias portuguesas na exposição Fertile Futures, que esteve patente em Veneza de maio a novembro de 2023. O segundo capítulo acompanha a segunda fase do laboratório, que se configurou no Seminário Internacional de Verão e reuniu, em julho de 2023 no Fundão, mais de setenta estudantes de múltiplas geografias a trabalhar em contexto de seminário prático com as equipas de arquitetura, na busca de propósitos para o contributo da arquitetura face à problemática em estudo. A terceira parte apresenta os ensaios críticos decorrentes das intervenções nas Assembleias de Pensamento em Veneza, Braga, Faro e Porto Santo. A quarta e última parte, apresenta os ensaios publicados no decurso da parceria editorial com a e-flux Architecture.

The second volume of Fertile Futures presents the entire laboratory developed during the programme of the Portuguese Official Representation at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Firstly, it reveals the perspectives and referential frameworks of each of the seven approaches to the problems of Portuguese hydrogeographies in the Fertile Futures exhibition, on display in Venice fromMay to November 2023. The second chapter focuses on the second phase of the laboratory, which took the form of the International Summer Seminar and brought together, in July 2023 in Fundão, more than seventy students from multiple geographies to work in a practical seminar context with the architecture teams, in the search for the reasons underlying the contribution of architecture to the issues under study. The third part presents the critical essays resulting from the interventions at the Assemblies of Thought in Venice, Braga, Faro and Porto Santo. The fourth and final part, brings together the essays published in the course of the editorial partnership with e-flux Architecture.

O primeiro volume de Fertile Futures regista, para memória futura, o programa desenvolvido no contexto da Representação Oficial Portuguesa na 18.ª Exposição Internacional de Arquitetura—La Biennale di Venezia 2023. Este primeiro volume revela as premissas de Fertile Futures, apresentando o tema da proteção, gestão e o futuro da água doce, a partir do registo processual dos primeiros momentos do projeto. Reúne, a partir da transcrição das intervenções de especialistas e consultores na primeira Assembleia de Pensamento, em Lisboa, a partilha de conhecimento que marcou o arranque do laboratório de projeto e acompanha o trabalho de cada uma das sete Oficinas da Hidrogeografia ao longo dos primeiros meses do projeto. Cristalizando as primeiras ideias arriscadas, a par com o diagnóstico realizado interdisciplinarmente sobre as distintas hidrogeografias, este volume inicial desvela as origens dos modelos propositivos que se apresentam, em Veneza, na exposição Fertile Futures.

The first volume of Fertile Futures records, for future reference, the programme developed for the Portuguese Official Representation at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia 2023. This first volume reveals the premises of Fertile Futures, presenting the theme of the protection, management and future of freshwater, from the procedural record of the first moments of the project. It gathers from the transcript of the interventions of experts and consultants in the first Assembly of Thought, in Lisbon, the sharing of knowledge that marked the start of the project laboratory, and accompanies the work of each of the seven Hydrogeography Workshops throughout the first months of the project. Bringing together the first
&#38;nbsp;daring ideas, along with the interdisciplinary diagnosis carried out in the different hydrogeographies, this initial volume reveals the origins of the proposed models that are presented in Venice, in the exhibition Fertile Futures.

	40 Dias/40 Days

[PT] “40 Dias/40 Days” é um projecto de edição dedicado à publicação física de um livro bilingue que relata, revisita e reinterpreta criticamente um projecto de investigação iniciado num conjunto de tertúlias, denominadas “Desde Casa”, realizadas em directo na plataforma digital Instagram, durante o período inicial da quarentena.

Ao longo de 40 dias consecutivos, entre 21 de Março e 29 Abril de 2020, a arquitecta, professora, investigadora e curadora portuguesa Andreia Garcia conversou, por períodos entre 30 a 90 minutos, com 20 arquitectas e 20 arquitectos, nacionais e internacionais, procurando reflectir sobre a pandemia de Covid 19, a obrigação de confinamento e os seus impactos na Arquitectura, na Cidade e na Sociedade. Acreditando na importância da preservação e análise crítica destas reflexões para memória futura enquanto ferramenta operativa, surgiu a vontade de editar esta publicação e de a disseminar nacional e internacionalmente, pelo que para tal foi precioso o apoio à criação e edição da Direção-Geral das Artes.

Nesse sentido, o projecto editorial consiste na transcrição, interpretação crítica, edição, tradução, revisão e publicação das 40 tertúlias realizadas, em formato de livro, bilingue, formalizando uma publicação física que construe sobre estas reflexões, em tempos críticos.

Mais do que uma síntese crítica encerrada, esta publicação traz a si a intenção de se constituir como uma plataforma em aberto que poderá permitir a descoberta e a exploração de outros caminhos e sentidos para a compreensão da relação do Homem com o mundo e do papel da Arquitectura na sua mediação.


[EN] “40 Dias/40 Days” is an editing project dedicated to the physical publication of a bilingual book that reports, revisits and critically reinterprets a research project initiated in a set of tertulias, called “Desde Casa”, held live on the digital platform Instagram, during the initial period of the quarantine.
Over 40 consecutive days, between 21 March and 29 April 2020, the Portuguese architect, teacher, researcher and curator Andreia Garcia talked, for periods between 30 and 90 minutes, with 20 architects and 20 architects, national and international, seeking to reflect on the Covid 19 pandemic, the obligation of confinement and its impacts on Architecture, the City and Society. Believing in the importance of preservation and critical analysis of these reflections for future memory as an operative tool, the will arose to edit this publication and to disseminate it nationally and internationally.
In this sense, the editorial project consists in the transcription, critical interpretation, editing, translation, proofreading and publication of the 40 tertulias held, in book format, bilingual, formalising a physical publication that builds upon these reflections, in critical times.
More than a closed critical synthesis, this publication is intended to be an open platform that may allow the discovery and exploration of other paths and directions for the understanding of the relationship between Man and the world and the role of Architecture in its mediation.

[PT] As Sebentas de Projecto pretendem dar a conhecer um olhar estilhaçado no tempo e no lugar sobre o ensino de Projecto de arquitectura. Procura-se uma contemplação multidimensional que permita apreender, mesmo que fugazmente, a natureza de uma disciplina que resiste à formalização, e em cujo âmago se gesta a visão distintiva do arquitecto. o recurso à entrevista como ferramenta expositiva concentra um conjunto de modalidades comunicativas que se tornam particularmente eficazes na aproximação a essa visão: experiência, relato, teorização, memória e aquilo a que, apesar da recusa do próprio em ceder a epítomes, se pode chamar de mestria.
Estruturalmente, isolámos três momentos nas declarações de eduardo Souto de Moura quanto à disciplina de Projecto: abrimos com um exercício de partilha sobre a memória enquanto aluno; recordámos algumas das mais emblemáticas lições ministradas enquanto professor; abordámos, por fim, a possibilidade de instigar novos caminhos temáticos e leituras pedagógicas para um ensino que se pretende actual.

 
[EN] Architectural Notes in Review aims to offer a shattered gaze on the teaching of architectural design across time and place. we have sought a multidimensional outlook that might allow for an apprehension, fleeting as it may be, of the nature of a disciple that resists formalization, and at whose core the architect’s distinctive vision is generated. as an expositive device, the interview concentrates a set of communicational modalities that are especially effective in approaching that vision: experience, account, theorization, memory and that which could be called, despite his own refusal of any epitomes, masterfulness.

We have isolated three structural moments in eduardo souto de Moura’s testimony about architectural design: a sharing exercise of his memories as a student; a recollection of some of his most emblematic lessons as a teacher; and the possibility of opening up new thematic pathways and pedagogical readings towards an education in line with our times.

	Galeria de Arquitectura&#38;nbsp;

[PT] Fundada em 2016, no Porto, a Galeria de Arquitectura surgiu da vontade de criação de um pólo cultural, independente, que expressasse a Arquitectura e os assuntos que envolvem a disciplina e se debruçasse pelas múltiplas formas de fazer arquitetura e produzir pensamento. As exposições, apresentações e debates, procuram, desde então, fomentar a reflexão transdisciplinar e a antecipação de temas ou problemáticas da contemporaneidade arquitectónica. Contando com múltiplas colaborações de outras disciplinas, geografias, e linguagens, a Galeria de Arquitectura apresenta-se como uma plataforma que promove o diálogo e a discussão a partir da Arquitetura, assumidamente aberta à comunidade, à cidade e ao mundo. 

Sedeada num micro-espaço, mas com uma enorme janela voltada para o passeio público da cidade do Porto, a Galeria de Arquitectura expõe Arquitectura como um exercício de pensar a própria disciplina e os seus limites. A partir do cruzamento com outras áreas e incluindo a abordagem da disciplina por práticas emergentes, exploratórias ou periféricas, este é um espaço de exposição, reflexão, debate e inovação, focado no confronto de ideias de Arte, Arquitectura, Design, Cidade e Território. Esta publicação assinala os seus 6 anos de programação.
[EN] Founded in 2016 in Porto, the Architecture Gallery  arose from the desire to create an independent cultural centre that expresses Architecture and the issues involving the discipline, and focuses on the multiple ways of making architecture and producing thought. Since then, the exhibitions, presentations and debates have sought to foster transdisciplinary reflection and the anticipation of themes or problems emerging from contemporary architecture. Relying on multiple collaborations from other disciplines, geographies, and languages, the Architecture Gallery presents itself as a platform that promotes dialogue and discussion based on architecture, outspokenly open to the community, the city and the world. 

Located in a micro-space, but with a huge window facing a public promenade in the city of Porto, the Architecture Gallery exposes architecture as an exercise in thinking about the discipline itself and its limits. Based on the intersection with other areas and including the approach towards the discipline through emerging, exploratory or peripheral practices, this is a space for exhibition, reflection, debate and innovation, focused on the exchange of ideas in Art, Architecture, Design, City and Territory.

	Shaping Shape


[PT] “Shaping Shape” parte do olhar sobre um projecto curatorial com o mesmo nome, editado por Andreia Garcia, trata da consolidação da memória do lugar através do desafio de transformar e explorar a forma como arquitectura e matéria urbana, a partir da Arte e da Arquitectura.

O livro resulta do pensamento produzido pela curadoria da área da Arquitectura para a “Bienal de Arte Contemporânea da Maia’17”, que assentou na consolidação da memória do lugar através do desafio à transformação e à exploração da forma (como matéria arquitectónica e urbana) a partir da Arquitectura e da Arte. Cada um dos lugares foi origem de um laboratório privilegiado — o de reflectir e actuar sobre o território específico da Maia num curto espaço de tempo, como é a duração de um evento como uma bienal —, o que permitiu, pelo atravessamento de diferentes práticas, discursos e reflexões, enquadrar o programa para a Arquitectura como uma metáfora das questões contemporâneas que, de forma mais permanente, e provocando os limites tangíveis inerentes às práticas dos artistas e dos arquitectos convidados, assumiu a discussão sobre o imaginário urbano, sobre os lugares de permuta da cidade, sobre o modo de pensar os processos identitários da preservação da cultura material, sobre a cidade enquanto expressão social do progresso, sobre a sociedade do espectáculo, sobre os espaços de confronto e de contaminação, sobre a arte pública como ferramenta para a reconstituição do espaço público, sobre o sentido de pertença, experiência, memória e apropriação.

[EN] “Shaping Shape” is a book looking at a curatorial project with the same name, signed by Andreia Garcia, about the consolidation of the memory of the site through the challenge to transform and explore form (as architectural and urban matter), from Architecture and Art.

The book results from the thinking produced by the curatorship of the Architecture area for the “Maia’17 Biennial of Contemporary Art”, which was based on the consolidation of the memory of the place through a challenge to transform and explore form (as architectural and urban material) from the perspective of Architecture and Art. By intersecting practices, discourses and reflections, this privileged laboratory offered a framework for the Architecture programme as a metaphor for contemporary issues that would more permanently (and teasing the tangible boundaries inherent to the practices of the invited artists and architects) ensure the discussion on the urban imaginary, the city’s places for permutation, the way of thinking identitary processes in the preservation of material culture, the city as social expression of progress, the spaces of confrontation and contamination, as well as the meaning of belonging, experience, memory and appropriation.
